On an island

I’m now four weeks in isolation. What pisses me off about this, is that I live in chaos – waiting to move. Yesterday, I searched through the already packed boxes, with a lot of effort, because I needed printer paper, which was already packed.

What belongs to my luck in misfortune that a nice young couple is doing the shopping for me. Which is certainly very good, but what it brings with it, I haven’t been to the supermarket for a month. I am not trapped in my apartment, I am trapped in my body. Which makes “letting do the shopping” difficult for me, I have to think about, what I need for about a week and then to write a shopping list. I used to go to the supermarket for example, because I ran out of milk and came out with a full shopping cart.

Which is also part of my luck that I can still manage things on my own – very freestyle, though, so I get by without any care – which might bring viruses into my house. It all takes a lot of time and I am also very creative now. I have already scattered the contents of bags, poured out liquids, poured the contents of pots next to them, dropped all kinds of things… Of course, all this does not make it easier to keep my house clean.

When I take a shower, I also consider very carefully, to avoid accidents, I prefer to go without daily showers. I am also very happy that I cut my hair, which actually makes things easier.

But I can still get dressed, do personal care, make myself something to eat. I have a treadmill, a vibration plate and many other sports equipment, so I can keep myself busy. Actually, I prefer to go into the woods and do my rounds with Nordic Walking poles, and go up and down the highway stairs there. I have to drive a short distance, which I am not allowed to do, so don’t tell anyone.

What’s annoying is that all my neighbours are also at home with all their children, and you can hear that. Even if they can’t help it, that I live such a quiet life. The loudest noise I make is when I drop something…

It makes me very thoughtful how one nursing home after another has to suffer a critical virus outbreak. I find this very unfortunate. People who are dependent on nursing care, take that into account in the end. I would like to know more about these cases. Hygiene measures of the respective institutions, the average age of the nursing staff and the patients. The severity of the processes in the homes. However, it is not a German phenomenon, I hear the same from other countries.

What worries me a little, my state of health, that my balance is getting worse and worse. My condition in general has become worse. My blood pressure has got noticeably worse, drinking a glass of water makes me black out, or it’s best to sit down and sneeze, or I’ll fall over. Turning over in bed is getting harder and harder, I choke myself more and more often, my speech has got worse and I have a strange pain in my legs (calves and thighs), it is a bit like muscle fever. Neuropathy?

What was a very pleasant surprise today, though, was that a friend, almost from childhood, contacted me after a long time. And it was a very pleasant conversation. Like she said, she needed time, and at first she was a little afraid to contact me. For many it is the first time to be confronted with their own limitedness, you have to understand that. Happily we had a very normal encounter, she asked her questions and so did I. By the way, I find it remarkable that help and interest comes much more from people from whom one does not expect it at all. On the other hand, family members and close friends often stay at a distance.

And finally, I am now officially a pensioner – “what a joy” – the procedure took 6 months, I now receive a third of my salary! One are retired retroactively from the time one applied for rehab. There is a good amount of difference, but the pension association settles this with the health insurance company. In my case it is not over yet, I hope I do not have to pay anything.

What else I got out:

All who live in Bavaria: https://www.landespflegegeld.bayern.de/antrag.asp

And, the nursing care insurance company will cover your move up to 4000 Euros, in some countries moving companies settle directly with the nursing care insurance company. I have made an application first (as for everything) and wait and see. In any case, call the nursing care insurance company early enough.

So, shall I say now how it is usual nowadays “Stay healthy”? That would be a little weird in our case. I prefer to say “Take care of yourself”.
