We exercise what we have taken for granted up to now

I must honestly say, speech therapy always ended up as last for me. Up to now I have also been able to hide my language problems well, hardly anyone has noticed it. We already have a lot of what we should do the whole day, now also silly and annoying exercises from the speech therapist? Something like that is also depressing, like the exercises from OT… we now learn to write, just like kids in the first class. We learn basic bodily functions such as walking, writing or speaking anew. How frustrating. Especially for me, a graphic designer who used to paint, now I get a call from my house bank, because my signature became different.

I can only urge everyone not to neglect speech therapy. Not being able to participate in conversations, coming out of breath when talking, or when people ask after each sentence “What did you say?” How annoying it is, when the conversation partner looks at you with a face as if he had eaten something bad, stares impatiently and bored, until you have finally said what you want. And you say the very shortest version of your plan, so that it is quickly over and you are released from the torments.

I’m not really the talker – I never was – and read aloud, from my thriller, every day to practice my voice. It’s not a bad novel, but it doesn’t captivate me, and I notice, that I’m reading a whole double page without having noticed the content. Which makes reading more difficult.

Today at the speech therapist’s I was allowed to read from a book, that was like made for me. Short, funny stories, where you have to stop and laugh out loud. I can only recommend everyone!

Dr. med. Eckart von Hirschhausen: Die Leber wächst mit ihren Aufgaben: Komisches aus der Medizin

So, read aloud, talk a lot and do your exercises! Because nothing is taken for granted anymore.
